鲍里斯·耶林科夫是一个居住在纽约上城区的有钱的、吝啬的、古怪的老头，他过着舒适的上层阶级的生活，喜欢古典音乐、鄙视摇滚。他的工作是研究量子力学，并一再自称“几乎就获得了诺贝尔奖”。因为这份自傲，他几乎看不起身边的所有人。由于对自己的婚姻和整个世界都失去了信心，鲍里斯放弃了自己优越的生活和太太，他从窗口跳了下去。不出所料，他自杀未遂。



　　当他醒来的时候，发现自己躺在中国城的廉价的小旅馆里。为了生活的他开始在这里教教小孩子下国际象棋和在学校里代课。但是由于生性高傲，他没有几个朋友，并且一直过着半封闭式的生活。正在这时，一个来自于美国腹地的金发姑娘安·塞斯丽婷闯进了他的生活。虽然有天仙般的美貌，但是她几乎就是一个什么都不知道的笨蛋。



　　在相处之下，鲍里斯渐渐喜欢上了自己现在的“波西米亚”风格的生活并且爱上了这个无知的小女子。但是他们如果要结婚的话，还要先“拜见岳父母”。不幸的是，塞斯丽婷的父母是一对非常难以搞定的夫妻。这其中又闹出了许多笑料。
